Painting glazing putty: when to paint, what to use, and why it can't wait
How long putty takes to skin, the 7–28 day painting window every data sheet specifies, why the paint must be carried onto the glass, and what to do when British weather refuses to cooperate.
Almost everything that goes wrong with glazing putty after it has been applied correctly comes down to the paint: applied too late, or never applied at all, or stopped short of the glass. This is the part of the job people treat as optional decoration, and it is the part that decides whether the fillet lasts five years or fifty.
Putty does not dry. It cures.
This distinction is not pedantry — it explains every timing figure below.
Linseed oil is a drying oil, which is a chemist’s term for an oil that hardens by reacting with oxygen rather than by evaporating. Nothing leaves glazing putty as it hardens. Oxygen goes in, the oil molecules cross-link into a tough polymer network, and the material stiffens progressively from the outside in.
Three practical consequences:
- A skin forms first. The surface has the best access to oxygen, so it cures first, while the core stays soft for months. That is exactly what you want: a fillet that stays slightly compliant behind a firm face can absorb the frame’s seasonal movement without cracking.
- It never entirely stops. Fifty-year-old putty is harder than five-year-old putty. It is also why hacking out old putty is such physical work.
- Warmth and moving air help; heat guns don’t. Gentle warmth speeds the reaction. A heat gun just cooks a skin over a soft core, and you will find that out when the brush wrinkles it.
The schedule
These figures come from UK manufacturers’ technical data sheets and assume mild, dry, reasonably still weather.

The number that surprises people is the last of the paintable ones: within 28 days. Not “when you get round to it next spring”. The window is deliberately narrow at both ends — too early and the brush deforms the surface into wrinkles that never flatten out; too late and UV has already started breaking down the surface you are trying to protect.
The fingertip test
There is no instrument for this and there does not need to be one. Press the fillet firmly with a fingertip:
- A print stays in it — too soon. Wait.
- Firm, slightly waxy, no print, but it gives fractionally under pressure — this is the moment. Paint it.
- Hard and dry, with fine crazing appearing — you are late. Paint it today, and prime the crazing first.
Test in several places. A fillet in full sun on the south side of a window can be ready days before the shaded north return of the same building.
What the weather does to the schedule
British conditions stretch every figure in the table, and there is no way to compress them back.
Cold. Below about 5 °C the oxidation reaction effectively stalls. Putty applied in a cold snap can sit essentially unchanged for weeks and then begin curing when the weather turns. A north elevation in February can take three weeks to reach a paintable skin.
Damp. High humidity slows the skin and, worse, can leave moisture trapped under the paint film if you rush it.
Shade. Consistently the biggest practical variable on a real building. Plan to paint the sunny elevations first and expect the shaded ones to need another week or more.
Heat. A very hot, dry spell skins putty quickly but also risks drawing oil out of the surface. Wipe the primed rebate with a rag lightly dampened in raw linseed oil before glazing in a heatwave, and get the paint on promptly.
If the 28-day window is going to be missed for reasons outside your control — scaffolding gone, weather closed in, job stopped — get a coat of primer on it. An unfinished primed fillet is enormously better than a bare one, and you can build the system properly later.
Carrying the paint onto the glass
This is the single most misunderstood detail in the whole trade, and homeowners routinely ask decorators to stop short of the glass because it looks like a mistake.
It is not a mistake. It is the specification.
Putty and glass are different materials that move at different rates, and the joint between them is a hairline capillary — precisely the geometry that pulls water in and holds it there. The paint film bridges that joint and closes it. Stop the paint at the putty edge and you have left the joint open, water gets behind the fillet, and within a few winters you have the classic dark line and a rotting rebate underneath.
Aim for 1–2 mm onto the glass. Cut the line with a good brush — an angled cutting-in brush makes it far easier — and take any excess off with a scraper once the paint is thoroughly dry. If you use masking tape, remove it while the paint is still soft, or it will pull the fresh edge off.
Which paint
The requirement is a flexible, exterior-grade film. In practice, three families work:
Traditional oil-based systems. Solvent-borne primer, undercoat and gloss are what putty was designed alongside, and they remain a good match. They have become slower and softer since the VOC regulations changed the formulations, so allow longer between coats than you used to.
Modern flexible acrylics. Water-based exterior systems have improved enormously and are the practical default for most decorators now: fast, low-odour, and they stay flexible. Use a system intended for exterior joinery, not interior emulsion, and prime the putty first.
Linseed oil paint. The historically matched partner — the same oil chemistry as the putty itself. It goes on very thin, takes days to dry between coats, and stays flexible for decades. On a heritage building it is often the best long-term answer, and it makes future repainting easier because it does not build a thick brittle shell.
What to avoid: anything hard and brittle, anything intended for interiors, and — obviously — anything you would need to sand back aggressively over old lead paint.
Primer first? On new putty, yes, and it is worth doing properly. A thin coat of the primer appropriate to your system seals the fillet and gives the finish coats something consistent to sit on.
Repainting existing putty
Most putty maintenance is not new glazing at all — it is the five-to-eight-year repaint, and how you handle the putty during it decides how long the fillet survives.
- Look before you sand. Sound but crazed putty gets cleaned, primed and painted. Putty that has lifted, powdered or opened away from the glass gets cut out and replaced first. See why putty cracks and falls out for how to tell the difference.
- Do not dry-sand old paint. On anything decorated before 1992 in the UK, assume lead. Work wet, or use controlled low-temperature infrared, sheet up and collect the debris.
- Rake out the glass joint wherever the old paint has split along it, so that the new paint can key into a clean joint rather than sit on a broken one.
- Reinstate the overlap onto the glass every time. This is the moment the seal is renewed, and it is the whole reason the repaint cycle preserves putty at all.
Done on schedule, that repaint is the entire maintenance regime for a puttied window. There are Georgian sashes in Britain still weathertight on original fillets, kept alive by nothing more elaborate than a brush every few years.
Common questions
Can I paint putty the day after glazing? No. The surface will wrinkle and drag under the brush and the finish will never flatten out. Wait for the skin.
Can I speed it up with a heat gun? No. You will skin the surface over a soft core, which is worse than waiting.
What if it has been unpainted for a year? Assess it first. If it is still firm, brush it clean, prime the crazing and paint. If it powders under a fingernail, it needs replacing — paint will not bring degraded putty back.
Does the putty colour matter under paint? No. Natural and brown cure identically; the choice only shows if the paint later wears thin.
Do I need to paint the inside back bedding? The internal putty line should be painted along with the rest of the internal joinery, but it lives in a benign environment and is not the weather seal. It is the external fillet that matters.
